First-Time Cat Owner Survival Guide

1. New Cat Shopping Checklist

Before bringing a new cat home, ensure you have the basic supplies: a secure pet carrier, stainless steel or ceramic food and water bowls, a litter box, clumping unscented litter, high-quality kitten or cat food, a scratching post, grooming brush, nail clippers, and a few simple toys.

2. The First Week: Patience & Safe Space

A new home can be overwhelming for a cat. Set up a small, quiet room (like a bathroom or bedroom) with all their supplies. Let them stay there for the first few days to adjust. Do not force them to cuddle or come out from hiding under the bed — let them explore at their own pace.

3. Estimating Monthly Expenses

Raising a cat requires a financial commitment. Expect to spend money on food, cat litter, routine vet checkups, and flea prevention monthly. It is recommended to set aside an emergency vet fund of $200-$500 or purchase pet insurance to handle unexpected illnesses.

4. Creating a Routine

Cats love routine and predictability. Feed them at the same times every day. Schedule 15-20 minutes of interactive play session using toys (like feather wands) in the evening before bed to burn their energy. This will help them sleep better throughout the night.
