Vaccinations stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies that fight specific diseases. They are the most effective way to protect your beloved cat from common, fatal infections such as rabies, panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus), and calicivirus.
Kittens require a series of vaccinations because maternal antibodies slowly wear off. The recommended schedule is: 1st shot (3-in-1 or 4-in-1 vaccine) at 6-8 weeks, 2nd shot at 10-12 weeks, and 3rd shot at 14-16 weeks. The Rabies vaccine is administered at 12 weeks of age or older.
Vaccine immunity fades over time. Adult cats need booster shots of the multi-disease vaccine and the rabies vaccine. Depending on local veterinary guidelines and your cat's lifestyle, booster shots are usually required annually or once every three years.
After vaccination, it is common for cats to experience mild lethargy, low fever, or temporary soreness at the injection site. These symptoms should disappear within 24-48 hours. However, if you notice severe swelling of the face, persistent vomiting, or difficulty breathing, seek immediate emergency vet care.
